Who we are.

Founding Villager

What’s in the name? [Villager]

Back in the Villages our Grandparents grew up in, resources weren’t disposable or infinite. You had a possession, it was made well, sustainably, from the available surrounds, and it was respectfully used for a lifetime – then passed down from generation to generation.

Nowadays, we often see things as disposable, only using things for a short time – and afterwards discarding them. Whether it be clothing, household furniture, toys, or even homes themselves – we simply knock them down and start again.

Back then, each Villager was also likely a producer. They made something, crafted things, or grew things that contributed to the wider community, their Neighbourhood…their Village.

As time has gone on, this ideology has become somewhat lost. Lost in so many fashion seasons, so many products, cheap materials, and the want for more and bigger and MORE! As a result – we have so much waste, and so much inefficient use of our planet’s natural resources.

What’s the deal with the Directory though?

Whilst thinking about the above, I started to really focus on what I was consuming, and also who (brands) I was supporting with my hard earned dollars. Do they make good stuff? Stuff that will endure? Do they care about how they are creating it and what impact they have? What materials are they using? Ahh so many questions!

I also started thinking A LOT about my home. Can it be more sustainable, and self sufficient – what changes can I make that are better for the environment? What can we produce? Stay tuned for all the fun on this project. COMING SOON.

The result of all these hours of research = this directory & platform of inspiration. I figured, why not curate everything into one place, and help people, like yourself – save time, and simply find items and support brands who care about something greater than just being in business..

To make change

The Village Code

What started as a pursuit of knowledge is now a growing resource for those looking to make their purchasing decisions impact our future Village.

At the same time, a platform, to highlight businesses promoting a more sustainable lifestyle through their practice.

When listing a brand, we look for:

Accreditations

Chief Villagers have worked hard on their craft, and earnt themselves some great recognition. We want to keep supporting them in their endeavours, and encourage others to follow in their path. Example. B Corp

Eco Conscious

The brands we have listed might not be perfect, but they have shown clear intent and a promise to the future of our Village. They have, along the way, consciously considered certain things like; ethical work practices, better packaging options, or implemented less harmful processes (amongst so many other things). They have prioritised sustainability in their business vision and by supporting them - we help them continue their journey to be even better.

Materials

The selection of materials is important. Important because different materials affect our land in different ways, and ultimately, better choices will use our resources more efficiently and more sustainably. We look out for brands who have considered their materials carefully, who aren't simply making products without future impact in mind.

Giving back

It’s not enough to just do business these days. Our listed brands will often donate or partner with organisations, as they recognise the wider effects of consumerism. Although their business likely creates products, it’s how they give back to their environment & community that makes us feel warm and fuzzy.
To have considerate impact

You’ve heard it before. Start small. Vote with your dollars. Choosing an eco-conscious brand today means more eco-conscious brands for the future.

Our decisions can and are having an impact on the future village generations will inherit. More importantly, these decisions, and who we choose to support – can and are changing the way businesses do business.
